Role
Identity, Editorial
MARGINALIA publishes four titles a year, mostly long form research that had never left the university. The work covered the imprint identity and the editorial system underneath it.
Brief
Academic work arrives formatted for a journal and reads like one. The press wanted its books to sit on a general interest table without losing the apparatus that makes them trustworthy.
Approach
The margin does the work. Notes, references and the editor own asides all live in a fixed outer column, so the main text stays uninterrupted and a reader chooses how deep to go. The mark is that column, drawn as a rectangle set off from its own frame.
System
A two column text grid used across every title
Three cover templates, separated by scale rather than colour
Reference typography that stays readable at footnote size
A spine system that lets a series be recognised across a shelf
Outcome
The first four titles ran on the system without a bespoke layout. Reviewers wrote about the notes, which for a press this size is the whole point.
